New Leake Primary School

Music

Intent

We provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, to develop the skills to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms, and to begin to make judgements about the quality of music.

Charanga Music Scheme

We use the Charanga Musical School Scheme, which offers teachers week by week lessons for Key Stage 1 and 2 in line with the Model Music Curriculum. It provides engaging and exciting resources to support each lesson as well as a clear progression in a range of skills, such as listening, improvisation, composition and performance. The children build on their skills to enable them to perform a piece at the end of each term. We have a class set of glockenspiels and ukuleles. There is also opportunity for children to play an instrument they are learning individually within the music lesson too.

Learning an Instrument

Whole Class

In Key Stage 1, the children will learn to play the glockenspiel following the Charanga programme, alongside a range of untuned percussion instruments.

In Key Stage 2, the children will play the glockenspiel or ukulele, alongside percussion instruments, following the Charanga scheme.

In addition to Charanga, all children in Year 4-6 will have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument for at least two terms each academic year taught by a Specialist Music Teacher  from the Lincolnshire Music Service, these instruments include: samba, djembe, clarinet, recorder and ukulele.

LMS, which is the lead organisation for the Lincolnshire Music Education Hub, is delighted to provide you access to high quality instrumental tuition. LMS received the 2019 Music Education Council Major Prize in recognition of their quality offer and outstanding leadership and innovation and most recently, won the Classical Music Digital Award for Youth Organisation of the Year, 2020.

Individual/Small group Tuition

If your child is interested in having individual instrument tuition, please speak to Mrs Crunkhorn in the school office. Mrs Sharpe teaches lessons on a Monday and a Tuesday afternoon each week.

Performing

Our children take pride in singing and we join together to sing in our whole school assemblies and services at our local Church. We welcome the children to play their instrument in assemblies and feel it is brilliant opportunity to share their progress and success as well as provide an encouraging audience for the pupils to perform to.
